El Instituto Salvadoreño del Café (ISC) delivered 1,334 quintals of fertilizer to coffee growers in the western part of the country as part of a strategy aimed at strengthening national production and reducing the effects that climate phenomena, such as El Niño, can have on the crop.
The initiative is part of the Coffee Sector Aumento a la Producción Program, developed within the Agronomic, Technified, and Sustainable Development Project for Central Standard Coffee Cultivation. The objective is to improve plantation yields through proper soil nutrition and specialized technical support.
The supplies were distributed to the El Progreso cooperative, located in Tacuba, and the San Raymundo cooperative, in Ahuachapán Centro. Together, these two organizations cultivate 148 manzanas (approximately 148 acres) of Central Standard coffee in areas located between 500 and 800 meters above sea level.
According to the ISC, the implementation of this fertilization plan will increase the productivity of the participating plots. The goal is to raise production from 4.30 quintals of green coffee per block to 20 quintals per block over a three-year period, representing a significant improvement for the producers involved.
The fertilizer provided has a balanced formula of 15-4-22-4MgO-0.1B-0.1Zn, designed to meet the crop’s nutritional needs. Its components aim to strengthen plant growth, improve root development, and promote the formation of fruits with better productive characteristics.
According to the institution, nitrogen and phosphorus contribute to foliage development and strengthen the root system, while potassium helps optimize nutrient mobilization to the fruits. Additionally, magnesium, boron, and zinc support processes related to photosynthesis and bean quality.
The strategy involves applying the fertilizer in two stages. The first phase will be implemented during the 2026 cycle and the second in 2027, allowing for technical monitoring of crop performance and evaluation of the results obtained in terms of productivity.
Coffee farmer Manuel Arévalo emphasized that the distribution of high-performance fertilizers will contribute to strengthening coffee plantations and improving future harvests. The president of the ISC, Mauricio Sansivirini, said that this action is part of a comprehensive strategy to revitalize productive areas, increase production, and strengthen the profitability of producers through an approach that combines technical assistance and business planning.
