With 57 votes, the Legislative Assembly authorized the Government of El Salvador to secure a US$75 million loan from the Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF). These funds will be allocated for the purchase of medical equipment and the physical and technological modernization of the San Juan de Dios hospitals in Santa Ana and San Miguel.
According to lawmakers, both hospitals feature a Centro de Maternidad “Nacer con Cariño El Nido”, therefore, some of the equipment will facilitate the continued implementation of the country’s Maternal-Child Health Model. The investment includes the necessary instruments and technology to enhance care for pregnant women and newborns.
The funds will also be directed toward strengthening the “Red Nido” a public maternal-perinatal health care system that integrates medical units, waiting centers, and spaces dedicated to humanized childbirth. The goal is for these services to provide care that meets standards of dignity, warmth, and safety for mothers and their children.
The financing will also allow for the modernization of the infrastructure and technology at both hospitals. The location of these care centers will enable the expansion of medical services to nearby departments, in line with the territorial distribution plan for investment.
In the western region, strengthening the Santa Ana hospital will allow for the care of populations from Santa Ana, Sonsonate, and Ahuachapán, while in the eastern region, the San Miguel hospital will have the capacity to benefit residents of San Miguel, Morazán, and La Unión.
Planned equipment acquisitions include ultrasound machines, clinical and medical instruments, technology for prenatal check-ups, materials for delivery rooms, and incubators, among other hospital equipment.
The investment aims to strengthen both the technological capacity and specialized care at both hospitals, particularly regarding services related to maternal and neonatal health. Thus, the loan proceeds will be used to upgrade the equipment at two hospitals that serve as key care centers for extensive areas in the western and eastern parts of the country.
With legislative authorization, the government can proceed to secure US$75 million in financing from CAF, earmarked for equipping and modernizing the San Juan de Dios hospitals in Santa Ana and San Miguel, as well as for strengthening maternal and child care through the “Red Nido” network.
