The Government of El Salvador will secure a US$75 million loan from the Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF) to continue implementing the Modelo de Salud Materno-Infantil and strengthen care in the country’s hospitals. The Finance Committee issued a favorable opinion for the financing, the resources of which will allow for the modernization of infrastructure, technology, and equipment for the care of mothers and newborns.
A significant portion of the funds will be allocated to equipping the “Nacer con Cariño El Nido” Maternity Center and strengthening the Red Nido, with the goal of expanding capacity and improving the quality of maternal and neonatal services. The financing includes the acquisition of ultrasound equipment, clinical and medical instruments, technology for prenatal checkups, materials for delivery rooms, incubators, and other resources necessary for specialized care.
The project also includes the strengthening of two regional hospitals. Hospital San Juan de Dios in Santa Ana will be equipped to expand its capacity and benefit residents of Sonsonate and Ahuachapán. Similarly, the Hospital San Juan de Dios in San Miguel will receive instruments and technology to serve patients from that department and surrounding areas.
According to explanations provided by Marlon Herrera, director general of Investment and Public Credit at the Ministry of Finance, the investment aims to improve the availability, quality, and efficiency of maternal and neonatal health services. The modernization of the equipment will strengthen care during the different stages of pregnancy, childbirth, and the initial care of newborns.
The loan would have a term of up to 18 years.
The financing with CAF would have a term of up to 18 years, including a grace period of up to 54 months, both counted from the date the loan agreement takes effect.
With this funding, the government seeks to strengthen the maternal and child healthcare network through infrastructure and specialized equipment, particularly in centers capable of serving patients from different parts of the country. The proposal must now proceed through the corresponding legislative process to finalize the loan agreement.
