Director general of Customs Benjamín Mayorga highlighted that the transformation of the customs system and the streamlining of clearance processes have helped strengthen El Salvador’s standing as an investment destination. In an interview, the official explained that the agency works in coordination with the economic cabinet to assist business leaders and investors interested in the conditions the country offers.
Mayorga noted that goods clearance times are a key factor distinguishing El Salvador in the realm of foreign trade. He explained that the goal is to process transport vehicles arriving at customs quickly and efficiently, thereby reducing timeframes that could otherwise result in additional costs for companies moving goods.
The official also highlighted a study by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) recognizing El Salvador’s Customs service as the fastest in Latin America. According to Mayorga, the study was conducted last december and reflects the results of measures implemented to expedite the transit and clearance of goods.

According to the Director General of Customs, this efficiency extends beyond comparisons with Central American neighbors. Mayorga stated that, based on the recognition, salvadoran Customs processing times also compare favorably to those in South America, representing an advantage for companies looking to move goods through the country.
The official linked this streamlining to the transformation of public services and the integration of technological tools into customs operations. The agency utilizes new infrastructure and technology, including scanning equipment, to support control measures, while striving to maintain processes that facilitate trade without compromising oversight responsibilities.
Mayorga further explained that the General Directorate of Customs maintains ongoing support for investors visiting the country to explore existing opportunities and conditions. In this process, he noted that business leaders are showing interest not only in El Salvador’s general conditions but also in the advantages the country offers for competing within the Central American region.

The head of Customs also highlighted the role of the institution’s staff. He stated that there is currently a focus on providing support and guidance to business leaders and customs users, with a greater readiness to resolve inquiries and address needs related to foreign trade processes.
For Mayorga, this combination of technology, infrastructure, faster clearance times, and user service is part of the transformation of public administration. The official maintained that these elements help build greater investor confidence and strengthen El Salvador’s position as a country seeking to offer competitive conditions for trade and investment activities.
