According to the head of the Dirección General de Energía, Hidrocarburos y Minas (DGEHM), Daniel Álvarez, this year El Salvador plans to inject 10 additional megawatts of geothermal energy to its national electricity grid. He also highlighted that this growth responds to the technical and financial support of international organizations such as the Agencia Internacional de Energías Renovables and the World Bank.

Álvarez explained that this boost represents a firm step towards the country’s energy diversification. “Thanks to all this support and to President Bukele, this year we are going to have 10 additional megawatts also in geothermal energy generation”, he assured. The official also said that El Salvador is already exploring alternatives such as nuclear energy, which points to greater energy independence in the future.
IRENA’s Director General, Francesco La Camera, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to the salvadoran government through a joint declaration. This agreement includes technical assistance, financing, and cooperation to implement the country’s energy component and strengthen its Contribución Nacional Determinada (NDC), key to combating climate change.

International cooperation also seeks to modernize hydroelectric resources, expand energy coverage and reduce emissions in industrial and transportation sectors. This transition will not only strengthen environmental sustainability, but also consolidate the country’s long-term economic resilience.
Although the 10 megawatts of energy have not yet been incorporated into the system, the announcement marks a concrete roadmap. El Salvador is emerging as a regional benchmark in renewable energy, with sustained projects that position the country on a cleaner, more stable and autonomous energy path.
