The Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) has requested a budget of US$95.3 million for 2027 to ensure its continued operation, advance technological modernization projects, strengthen prosecutor training, and monitor infrastructure development. The budget also includes resources to support the institution’s work during next year’s presidential, legislative, and municipal elections.
The Attorney General of the Republic, Rodolfo Delgado Montes, presented the budget projections to the Finance Committee of the Legislative Assembly during the second working session dedicated to studying the draft General State Budget Law, special budgets, and budgets for autonomous institutions for 2027. The request totals US$95,321,505, of which US$94,580,340 would be allocated to operating expenses, equivalent to 99.2% of the budget, while US$741,165 would correspond to public investment. This amount represents an increase of US$3.6 million compared to the US$91,664,660 allocated to the institution in 2026.
Delgado Montes explained that the resources will cover the expenses of prosecutorial staff, offices, and the necessary resources for conducting investigations. These resources will also support the institution’s operations throughout the country and continue coordinating criminal investigations with the Policía Nacional Civil (PNC).
Among the projects planned for 2027 is the second phase of an intelligent system for receiving complaints, which will prioritize cases and guide citizens to the appropriate institution. Progress is also being made on INTEGRA, a technological platform that will register and track criminal cases from their inception to their resolution, manage the chain of custody of evidence, and facilitate criminal analysis.
The Prosecutor’s Office also plans to promote specialized training through the Specialized Institute of Higher Education, which will offer a Master’s Degree in Criminal Investigation. This program aims to strengthen the knowledge and professional practice of assistant prosecutors through advanced academic training.
In terms of infrastructure, the institution will continue with four ongoing projects. These include the construction and equipping of prosecutor’s offices in San Miguel, Ahuachapán, and La Unión, as well as the rehabilitation and equipping of a prosecutor’s building in San Salvador and the construction of an adjacent parking garage at the Government Center.
Part of the requested funds will also support the FGR work during the 2027 elections. According to Delgado Montes, there will be electoral delegates at polling stations both within the country and abroad, who will ensure the legality of the process and the collection and safekeeping of the closing and tally sheets issued by each polling station. The official clarified that these expenses correspond to the needs of an election year and will not be ongoing.
During his presentation, the FGR reported that, between may 2021 and october 16, 2026, the institution handled 573,286 complaints, registered as initiated cases. During that same period, it reported assisting 567,405 victims and issuing 58,886 administrative arrest warrants.
In addition, the FGR processed 348,916 cases and resolved 607,543 cases during the reporting period. With the requested budget for 2027, the institution seeks to maintain its operational capacity, continue its modernization projects, and strengthen its ability to fulfill its responsibilities, including the extraordinary work required for the electoral process.
