With an investment of US$865 thousand from the Comisión Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma (CEPA) and the Corporación Centroamericana de Servicios de Navegación Aérea (COSESNA), the reactivation of air connectivity has been boosted with the inauguration of the El Jagüey Aerodrome, in La Unión, a key step to link the eastern zone with San Salvador.
With this infrastructure, the Government seeks to consolidate El Salvador as a regional air hub and strengthen the growth of the economy in the eastern part of the country.
Federico Anliker, President of CEPA, highlighted that this work is the first step in a series of projects to improve air connectivity in the country. “Thanks to the vision of President Nayib Bukele, we now have a modern and safe aerodrome that will attract investment and promote economic growth”, said Anliker.
Likewise, the head of CEPA indicates that this new project is available for all types of tourist aircraft of up to 20 to 25 passengers, helicopters, and even to boost commerce in the eastern zone, which will have an economic and tourist impact.
The airfield includes a runway 1,340 meters long and 20 meters wide, a 160 m² terminal, and an 80-meter safety strip. It will also be used for private aviation and Ministry of Defense operations.
The Minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez highlighted the tourist impact of the work, mentioning that in 2024, 3.9 million visitors were received, of which 1.5 million made trips to the eastern zone. “This type of infrastructure will facilitate tourist access and strengthen our position as a regional leader in tourism”, she said.
The Executive Director of the Civil Aviation Authority, Homero Morales, assured that the runway and approach systems comply with national regulations, guaranteeing the safety of air operations. “This aerodrome is ready to receive aircraft with international standards”, he said.
In addition, the project will generate direct and indirect jobs and reduce travel times for people and goods. El Jagüey Aerodrome adds to the salvadoran government’s efforts to modernize the national infrastructure, consolidating the country as a reference in logistics and tourism in the region.
