The Legislative Assembly’s Finance Committee issued a favorable opinion on amending the 2026 Budget Law to include US$226 million earmarked to bolster funding for the Ministries of Education, Health, and Public Works. Of the total amount, US$69 million would be allocated to the Ministerio de Educación (MINED) to fund activities related to the early preparation of the 2027 school supply kit.
According to Michelle Arce, Deputy Director General of Budget at the Ministry of Finance, these funds will cover basic services and advance the procurement processes for materials needed to produce and distribute the school supply kits received by thousands of students in the public education system.
The official explained that the goal is for MINED to begin the administrative and logistical procedures required well in advance to ensure the timely delivery of educational supplies at the start of the 2027 school year. This includes the purchase of materials and the hiring of artisans from micro and small businesses involved in the production of the program’s various components.

According to Arce, early planning aims to prevent delays in the production and distribution of school kits, ensuring that students have the essential tools for their learning process from the start of the school year. In addition, this strategy allows for better organization of the supply chain and provides greater certainty to the suppliers involved in the program.
The investment would also have an economic impact on micro and small businesses that traditionally participate in the production of uniforms, footwear, and other educational materials. Early contracting would allow them to organize their production, create jobs, and strengthen their business operations before the start of the next school year.

The funds would be part of a budget reform backed by tax revenue surpluses recorded by the Ministry of Finance during the first half of 2026. According to authorities, increased tax collection and efforts to combat tax evasion have made additional resources available to fund projects considered priorities for the population.
With this allocation, the government seeks to ensure the continuity of one of the country’s most important educational programs, enabling public-sector students to receive the materials they need in a timely manner to carry out their academic activities throughout 2027.
