On september 30, the Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE) unanimously approved the decree calling for the 2027 elections, in which salvadorans will elect the President and Vice President of the Republic, deputies to the Legislative Assembly, and members of municipal councils. Election day is set for february 28, 2027.
Over 6.5 million salvadorans are eligible to vote
TSE President Roxana Soriano noted that this announcement triggers a new phase of the electoral calendar. She detailed that, as of september 15, 2026, the electoral registry listed more than 6.5 million salvadorans eligible to vote: 5,551,707 within the country and 982,682 abroad.

Two voting methods remain in place for salvadorans living abroad. Those holding a DUI with an address abroad may vote remotely via the internet from january 30 to february 28, 2027. Meanwhile, those voting using a salvadoran passport, as well as those holding a DUI with an address within the country, may go to designated polling centers abroad on february 28 to cast their votes in person using an electronic voting system.
Soriano reported that the TSE plans to set up 92 polling centers across 29 countries and 66 cities, including 53 in the United States. She also highlighted that, for the first time under the new electoral framework, salvadorans abroad will have their own dedicated constituency to elect six deputies.

TSE prepares simulations for voting systems
The presiding magistrate explained that the TSE is working on the Plan General de Elecciones (PLAGEL) 2027, which comprises 46 electoral programs including candidate registration, training for electoral bodies, logistical preparation, and testing of technological systems.
A first simulation involving the transmission of preliminary results and remote internet voting will take place in november, while a final vote-counting simulation will be conducted in december. Soriano noted that these exercises will allow the body to verify procedures, measure response times, identify vulnerabilities, and address potential issues prior to election day.

“The call to election approved today produces concrete legal effects and activates a clearly defined institutional responsibility”, said Soriano, adding that the TSE is committed to conducting the process with technical rigor, legal certainty, transparency, and impartiality.
Candidate registration begins october 1
The electoral calendar moves forward on october 1, marking the start of registration for candidates running for President and Vice President of the Republic and for deputies to the Legislative Assembly. This process will conclude on november 19.

For municipal council candidacies, registration will begin on november 9 and end on november 19.
Soriano called upon eligible salvadoran voters, both within and outside the country, to inform themselves about their options and to participate freely and responsibly. “It is you, the citizens, who will decide the country’s direction through your vote”, he said.

The elections will be held on february 28, 2027, the date that also marks the end of the period for remote online voting from abroad.
