The Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Group) mobilized US$12.2 billion in private capital during 2025, a record figure that reflects its ability to attract resources from investors and expand financing for development in Latin America and the Caribbean. This amount represents an increase of approximately 213% compared to the US$3.9 billion mobilized in 2021, more than tripling the figure over four years.
The mobilization of private capital aims to expand the resources available to drive projects and address the region’s development needs. For the IDB Group, attracting private investment is key to financing larger-scale initiatives, accelerating economic growth, and contributing to job creation, while completing resources from other funding sources.
These results are the product of the joint efforts of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which focuses on the public sector, and IDB Invest, its private-sector arm. Both institutions work to attract investors and channel more resources toward the economic and social priorities of Latin America and the Caribbean.
“Mobilizing more private capital is essential to achieving the scale and impact needed to accelerate growth, create jobs, and generate the prosperity that the region requires”, stated Ilan Goldfajn, President of the IDB Group.
The increase in mobilized resources is part of an institutional transformation driven by the BIDImpact+ strategy, which places the attraction of private capital, and the capacity to generate a multiplier effect, at the heart of the Group’s operations. The goal is to leverage its financial instruments and structuring expertise to facilitate the participation of more investors in development projects.
Among the tools employed is the expansion of financial guarantees, which can help mitigate specific risks and encourage investor participation in operations linked to public policy reforms, thematic projects, and investment initiatives. The IDB Group has also strengthened its advisory capabilities for developing public-private partnerships, mechanisms that allow for the combination of resources and expertise from both the public and private sectors.
Meanwhile, IDB Invest has advanced its “originate-to-share” business model, through which it seeks to expand the participation of other investors in its operations. This approach incorporates financial products and solutions designed to diversify capital sources and facilitate the flow of more private resources into projects across the region.
Diversifying the investor base is significant because it expands the available sources of financing and increases the capacity to support development initiatives. Through guarantees, advisory services, and innovative financial solutions, the IDB Group aims to mobilize additional resources and leverage its own participation to incentivize new investments.
The Group also announced that it will adopt updated joint methodologies, developed by multilateral development banks, for its future annual reports. This revised framework will broaden the metrics used to measure resource mobilization by incorporating the generation of private financing, with the goal of enhancing transparency and more accurately reflecting the impact of innovative financial instruments.
The figure reached in 2025 marks progress in the IDB Group’s strategy to attract private capital to Latin America and the Caribbean. The challenge lies in transforming this mobilization capacity into greater investment opportunities, economic growth, and job creation, through projects that contribute to the development of countries in the region.
