Ahuachapán has approximately 30,000 blocks dedicated to basic grain production—an expanse representing significant economic potential for the department and for El Salvador’s agricultural supply—reported Óscar Domínguez, the ad honorem deputy minister of Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG).
Within this area, more than 2,500 productive blocks stand out in the Los Toles canton and its surroundings, including lands belonging to the Cooperativa Palo Pique. These lands are part of the Programa de Aumento a la Producción, through which MAG identifies zones with favorable conditions for agricultural activities.
From an economic perspective, the availability of these productive lands can help strengthen food production and the activities of the department’s producers. Utilizing areas with the best conditions also allows agricultural efforts to be directed toward territories capable of sustaining higher basic grain production.
Domínguez noted that Ahuachapán has the potential to become one of the country’s main granaries, alongside Sonsonate and Santa Ana. To realize this potential, MAG is prioritizing land based on technical criteria that determine where the best planting conditions exist.
One of the key factors analyzed is water availability, whether through rainfall or auxiliary irrigation systems. This element is crucial for reducing risks associated with weather conditions and providing greater support for productive activities.
The official explained that weather conditions vary across territories and that the use of technical data, monitoring, and technological tools makes it possible to identify zones with the best cultivation conditions. With this information, the government aims to direct production efforts toward areas with the greatest potential.
In this context, the more than 30,000 blocks dedicated to basic grains in Ahuachapán form an important foundation for the development of the department’s agricultural activity. Added to this are the more than 2,500 blocks identified in Los Toles and the surrounding area, which demonstrate the productive capacity of specific zones.
The Programa de Aumento a la Producción seeks to harness this potential through planning based on the characteristics of each territory. For Ahuachapán, the goal is for its productive lands to contribute not only to the production of basic grains but also to strengthening economic activity linked to the agricultural sector and consolidating the department as one of the country’s key production hubs.
