Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill received the Acting Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), Carl Skau, during a meeting in which both parties reviewed the progress of their cooperation and explored new opportunities to strengthen food security in El Salvador.
The meeting is part of the follow-up to the five-year cooperation framework established in 2022, through which the WFP allocated US$129.2 million to support programs and initiatives aimed at improving food security, strengthening productive capacities, and assisting vulnerable populations.
These resources have complemented national efforts through projects focused on emergency preparedness and response, support for small-scale farmers, empowerment of entrepreneurs in the food sector, and school feeding and nutrition programs.
During the meeting, Minister Hill emphasized that the WFP has become a strategic partner in expanding the impact of actions aimed at the development and well-being of the salvadoran population. She also expressed her gratitude for the support of the United Nations agency and reaffirmed her commitment to continue working towards greater food security and sustainability.
One of the key programs within this cooperation is GastroLab, an initiative that provides culinary training and skills to young people from different communities, with the goal of facilitating their entry into the workforce in sectors such as tourism, hospitality, and restaurants that have shown growth in recent years.
Carl Skau reaffirmed the WFP’s willingness to continue collaborating with El Salvador on projects that generate opportunities and strengthen the country’s capacity to address challenges related to food and sustainable development.
The meeting also included the participation of the WFP Representative in El Salvador, María Guimarães, and served to reaffirm the alliance between the country and the international organization to promote initiatives that benefit salvadoran families.
