The Legislative Assembly, with 58 votes, amended the 2026 Budget Law to incorporate US$137,000 into the Ministry of Education’s budget. These funds will be used to strengthen the Becas Bicentenario Program and expand financial support for students in vulnerable situations.
The funds come from a non-reimbursable financial cooperation agreement with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI). This means that these resources do not need to be repaid and will be incorporated into the Ministry of Education’s budget to finance a new phase of the program.
With this allocation, the fourth cohort of Becas Bicentenario will be expanded, and 137 new scholarships will be awarded to students from six schools: Sor Clara Quiroz and Walter A. Soundy, in La Libertad; Dr. Arturo Romero and General Fabio Morán, in Ahuachapán; and José Pantoja Hijo, in La Unión.
In this way, the program will reach a total of 237 beneficiary students, adding the 137 new scholarships to the 100 awarded in the three previous editions.
Each beneficiary student will receive a contribution of US$1,000 annually, in addition to support to cover expenses related to food, transportation, internet access, and educational materials. Therefore, the US$137,000 added to the budget will directly translate into resources so that 137 young people can continue their academic training with financial support.
The program is aimed at students from eighth grade through high school who meet requirements related to their academic performance, commitment to their studies, and socioeconomic status.
Thus, the addition of US$137,000 not only expands the number of beneficiaries of the Becas Bicentenario but also allows for extending educational support to young people from different departments of the country, reducing some of the economic barriers that can hinder the continuation of their studies.
