For the fourth time, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly with 57 votes agreed to exempt from paying taxes new goods for visitors from abroad entering El Salvador during the “Christmas and New Year’s Eve” festivities. This for an amount higher than the amount allowed by the Law of Baggage of Travelers from Abroad, the amount allowed for the exoneration must not exceed US$3,000 in customs.
The measure will be in effect from december 1, 2024 to january 31, 2025. Visitors will be exempted from payment of taxes such as the transfer of personal property and the provision of services (VAT).
Among the products that may be introduced are clothing, medicines, books, instruments of profession or trade, 500 grams of tobacco, musical instruments, articles for personal use, among others.
The approved conditions exclude from the benefit to the carriers, the managers of parcels, officers and crew members of any means of transport (air or maritime), which carries out a regular traffic of passengers and merchandise between El Salvador and any place abroad when they enter in the exercise of their activity.
In recent years, the country has been a tourist destination, both for Salvadorans living abroad and for visitors interested in discovering new areas where they can have fun, especially during Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations.
This is due to the high level of security and peace achieved with the measures implemented by the Government.
