The increase in vehicular traffic during the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations has led to a critical rise in traffic accidents, some with fatal consequences, according to authorities from the Sistema Nacional de Protección Civil. The situation has raised alarms, especially on highways connecting to the interior of the country and areas with high tourist traffic.
According to the Director of Protección Civil, Luis Alonso Amaya, a significant increase in traffic accidents has been recorded in approximately 10 days, prompting an urgent call to respect traffic regulations. The official emphasized that speeding, reckless driving, and driving under risky conditions continue to be recurring factors in these incidents.
Authorities pointed out that, during this period, many people make long journeys, often at night, which increases the likelihood of accidents if preventive measures are not taken. Among the main recommendations are planning trips in advance, avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol, respecting speed limits, and always wearing a seatbelt.

In this context, the increase in traffic accidents is being addressed as a priority within the End-of-Year Plan, a preventative strategy that also includes inspections and complementary actions to reduce risks during the holidays. While these efforts include controls in other areas, the current emphasis remains on road safety given the direct impact that accidents have on the lives and health of the population.
The Director General of the Cuerpo de Bomberos, Baltazar Solano, said that traffic accidents continue to be one of the main causes of emergencies attended during this season, which demands greater civic responsibility to avoid tragedies that can be prevented.

The Governor of La Libertad, Yaneth Bran, explained that the End-of-Year Plan responds to a preventative vision aimed at anticipating risks, strengthening institutional response capacity, and promoting responsible decisions by citizens, especially during periods of high traffic volume.
Authorities reiterated that prevention is key to reducing the number of accidents and avoiding loss of life during the holidays. They urged drivers to drive responsibly, respect the law, and prioritize their own lives and the lives of other road users.
