The Dirección General de Aduanas de El Salvador warned salvadorans residing abroad who plan to return to the country to avoid improper fees during the process of bringing their household goods into the country. The Directorate reminded them that the law establishes clear benefits and limits official fees.
According to the institution, salvadorans returning to the country have the right to bring in household goods, work tools, and up to two vehicles per family group. These benefits are provided for in the legislation to facilitate the return of those who have lived outside the national territory.
However, authorities emphasized that the only official payment to Customs is the US$18 inspection fee, which covers the verification process for goods entering the country. Therefore, they urged salvadorans to be properly informed to avoid irregular payments or fees not authorized by law.
The institution explained that transportation, cargo, and logistics costs are not customs fees, as these services are provided by private companies that users must contract in advance to move their belongings to El Salvador.

Given this situation, authorities recommended that those planning to return request written quotes from transportation or logistics companies to clearly understand the details of the contracted services, their terms, and associated costs.
In addition to warnings about potential improper charges, current regulations allow returning salvadorans to bring in furniture and appliances valued at up to US$100,000 as part of their household goods, as well as tools necessary for their trade or profession up to the same value, facilitating their reintegration into the country and their families.
Furthermore, the legislation allows for the importation of up to two vehicles per family group, a measure intended to support the mobility of families who decide to settle again in El Salvador after living abroad.

The Dirección General de Aduanas de El Salvador reiterated that these benefits are guaranteed by law and are part of the assistance the State provides to salvadorans returning to the country. In this regard, it urged the public to learn about their rights and report any attempts to charge irregular fees during the process of bringing their belongings into the country.
Finally, the authorities reminded salvadorans that they can consult the requirements, procedures, and details of these benefits through official Customs channels, with the goal of ensuring an orderly and trouble-free return.
