The Legislative Assembly ratified with 60 votes an agreement between El Salvador and Italy that will allow the reciprocal recognition of non-provisional driver’s licenses issued by both countries. The measure aims to facilitate the mobility of citizens residing in either nation by eliminating additional procedures for obtaining a driver’s license.
The agreement was signed on june 19, 2026, in Rome, Italy, and establishes that salvadorans residing in Italy can convert their driver’s licenses without having to take theoretical or practical exams. Similarly, Italian citizens residing in El Salvador can follow the same procedure under the conditions established in the agreement.
During the 121st plenary session, legislators explained that the treaty is reciprocal, meaning that documents issued by the competent authorities of both countries will be recognized for conversion purposes. This represents a simplification of the administrative processes that foreigners must normally complete to legally drive in their country of residence.
However, the agreement stipulates that the traffic authorities of El Salvador and Italy may request additional tests or verifications in special cases. These measures would only be applied when there are circumstances that require confirming the driver’s ability or status, in accordance with the regulations of each nation.
Authorities believe that this mechanism will especially benefit people who depend on a vehicle for work, as it will reduce the time, costs, and procedures related to obtaining a local license. It will also allow drivers to move legally and safely in the country where they establish their residence.
With the entry into force of this agreement, El Salvador and Italy strengthen their bilateral cooperation on mobility and facilitate the integration of their resident citizens, providing them with greater opportunities to access employment and navigate their daily lives more easily.
