The government plans to establish new wholesale distribution points in the eastern region of the country as part of a strategy to transform the food marketing chain and bring agricultural products closer to retailers and consumers at more competitive prices. This was announced by the Vice Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Óscar Domínguez, who stated that this measure will expedite product distribution and reduce costs in the supply chain.
According to the official, while the distance between production centers and markets can influence marketing costs, there are unjustified price differences that ultimately affect both consumers and retailers. Given this situation, the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería seeks to strengthen a distribution network that facilitates access to lower-cost food throughout the eastern region.

Domínguez explained that the new wholesale distribution points will complement the work already being done by the Central de Abastos de Usulután, recently inaugurated to bring agricultural products closer to vendors, restaurants, pupusa stands, and businesses dedicated to the purchase, sale, and processing of food.
According to data shared by the official, the Central de Abastos currently offers lower prices compared to other markets in the eastern region. For example, a box of Hass avocados can be purchased for as little as $27 in Usulután, while in some markets it reaches up to $50. Similar situations are observed with products such as carrots, eggplants, cabbages, lettuce, and bananas.

Authorities believe that expanding the distribution infrastructure will reduce the number of intermediaries involved in the marketing process, improve logistical efficiency, and make it easier for food to reach the population at more affordable prices.
The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the food supply and create more favorable conditions for producers, vendors, and consumers. With the future installation of these wholesale distribution points in the eastern part of the country, the benefits observed at the Central de Abastos de Usulután are expected to be extended, moving towards a more efficient, transparent, and competitive supply chain.
