The Viceministerio de Transporte (VMT) alerted the public to a new type of scam in which individuals are sending fake text messages to trick users into believing they have outstanding traffic fines.
According to the institution, numerous citizens reported receiving SMS messages today informing them of an alleged unpaid traffic violation and including a link to make an immediate payment, warning of possible legal penalties if the fine is not paid.
In response, the VMT clarified that these messages are fraudulent and reiterated that Sertracen does not send links via text message to make payments for fines.
Authorities emphasized that the only official website to check and pay traffic violations is the Sertracen portal and therefore recommended not clicking on links received via SMS, social media, or messaging applications that do not come from official sources.
They also urged the public to always verify information before providing personal or banking details and to use only official channels for any procedures related to traffic fines.
The VMT also advised those who receive these types of messages not to open the links, to delete the SMS, and to report the incident to 2999-9999, in order to prevent further scams and protect other users.
