The Government of El Salvador announced support measures for livestock producers affected by the weather conditions associated with El Niño, with a focus on the eastern and central regions of the country. One of the main initiatives will be the sale of livestock maintenance feed at a price of US$10 per 100-pound bag.
The announcement was made by the Vice Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Óscar Domínguez, who explained that this measure aims to facilitate access to livestock feed in areas where the drought has created the greatest difficulties for producers. The feed will be provided by Concentrados de El Salvador at the established price.
Producers will be able to purchase the feed at various designated locations in the affected areas. These include Centro de Desarrollo Ganadero de Morazán, Centro de Desarrollo Agropecuario de Guacotecti and CENTA agency in Nueva Esparta. ACOPAC de R. de R. L., AGASAL de R. de R. L., AGAP de R. de R. L., ACOPAN de R. de R. L., AGAES de R. de R. L. y ACPADSAN de R. de R. L will also participate.
In addition to providing affordable feed concentrate, authorities announced they will work with the sugarcane sector to distribute sugarcane bagasse. This resource will supplement livestock feed and help address the challenges posed by reduced pasture availability during the dry season.
Support for the livestock sector will also include increased technical and veterinary assistance. The Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería will increase training sessions and visits from specialists, prioritizing areas most affected by the weather conditions.
These measures are part of a national strategy that the government began implementing in early 2016 in response to forecasts related to El Niño phenomenon. Among the actions implemented are irrigation systems in vulnerable areas, the sale of agricultural inputs at affordable prices, and special financing for small producers through the Banco de Fomento Agropecuario, with preferential rates starting at 4%.
The government also noted that the weather conditions had been previously predicted through information from MARN and MAG, including the Monitoreo Inteligente de la Red Agropecuaria (MIRA). Authorities indicated that some producers did not follow the recommendations for early planting or lack auxiliary irrigation systems, a situation that has contributed to the losses recorded in certain areas.
With these measures, the authorities seek to reduce the economic impact of the drought on families engaged in livestock farming and facilitate access to feed for their animals. The announced price of US$10 per 100-pound bag of concentrate thus becomes one of the main support measures directed at the livestock sector in the eastern and central regions of the country.
