Óscar Domínguez, the ad honorem deputy minister of Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG), reported that El Salvador’s western and central regions recorded strong harvests—a result he attributed to early planting, the use of supplemental irrigation, and favorable weather conditions. According to the official, these results help strengthen the supply of agricultural products in the domestic market.
From an economic perspective, Domínguez emphasized that the availability of local produce is crucial for maintaining national supply and easing pressure on food prices. A larger agricultural supply allows domestic production to meet part of the internal demand and can help curb price hikes linked to product shortages.
The official explained that one of the strategies implemented by MAG has been to identify land with optimal productive potential and support farmers with tools such as supplemental irrigation. These measures aim to boost plot productivity while simultaneously reducing producers’ vulnerability to periods of climate variability that could impact yields.
However, Domínguez noted a different situation in the country’s eastern zone, where conditions were less favorable—particularly for farming and livestock-rearing families lacking supplemental irrigation systems. This regional disparity poses an economic challenge for the agricultural sector, as water availability can determine the ability to sustain production during adverse weather conditions.

Given this scenario, MAG plans to expand support initiatives and prioritize land with high productive potential to improve conditions for future harvests. The strategy is not only to address producers’ immediate needs but also to strengthen their capacity to maintain their income and livelihoods in the face of future weather events.
Domínguez also indicated that the results achieved so far are positive, though he warned that climate-related challenges necessitate increased intervention in the agricultural sector. To this end, he stressed the importance of strengthening coordination with agencies and cooperation partners so that support resources and programs can reach a greater number of farming families.
The official maintained that these measures have an impact extending beyond individual production units, as strengthening agricultural production is directly linked to supply security and stability in the food market. In this regard, higher volumes of domestic production can help manage periods of lower supply and mitigate the risk of price hikes.
Finally, Domínguez assured that El Salvador is well-supplied, addressing concerns regarding potential scenarios of speculation and rising prices. The government aims to ensure that strengthening production and supporting farmers maintains a sufficient supply for the domestic market while protecting both producers and consumers.
