Medical tourism continues to gain relevance in El Salvador. According to data shared by Alejandra Durán, executive director of Corsatur, 3% of the 4.1 million international visitors who entered the country in 2025 indicated that their main reason for traveling was to receive medical treatment and undergo their recovery process in El Salvador. This figure equates to more than 120,000 people who chose the country as a destination to address their health needs.
According to Durán, this segment has found favorable conditions for its growth thanks to the combination of modern infrastructure, specialized technology, certified medical personnel, and a tourism offering that allows treatments to be complemented with spaces for rest and recovery. She emphasized that collaboration between the health sector and tourism businesses represents an important opportunity to strengthen this industry.
The most requested treatments by visitors include orthodontics, cosmetic surgery, bariatric surgery, ophthalmology, stem cell therapies, oncology, and cardiology. The main patients come from the United States and Canada, especially members of the salvadoran diaspora seeking medical care for themselves or for family members residing in the country.
In this context, ProSalud Medical Center organized a meeting with tour operators to analyze the opportunities offered by medical tourism and promote partnerships that will allow for a comprehensive experience for patients. The initiative seeks to strengthen coordination between the health and tourism sectors to expand the range of services available to international visitors.
During the event, Ana Marcela Jiménez, National and International Commercial Director of ProSalud Medical Center, highlighted the investment environment she has found in El Salvador. She explained that, after developing business projects in other countries in the region, she decided to establish operations in El Salvador due to the growth opportunities she identified in the local market.
Authorities and industry representatives agree that factors such as the quality of healthcare professionals, faster wait times, competitive costs, and safe conditions have contributed to positioning El Salvador as an emerging destination for medical tourism. Furthermore, the possibility of combining specialized care with tourist activities and well-being facilities strengthens the country’s appeal to these types of visitors.
With the growth of this sector, medical tourism is consolidating itself as a niche with the potential to attract more international visitors, generate economic activity, and expand El Salvador’s profile as a regional destination for health and wellness services.
