The Defensoría del Consumidor has conducted more than 300 verifications throughout El Salvador during this holiday period, protecting the pockets of thousands of families and ensuring that the rights of consumers are not violated. The deployment has been led by the president of the Defensoría del Consumidor, Ricardo Salazar, as part of the Summer Plan implemented by the Government in coordination with the National Civil Protection Commission.

On this occasion, the operations were concentrated in the municipality of La Libertad Costa, a key tourist destination, where surveillance was intensified to avoid economic abuses against those who enjoy the season. The work includes inspections to stores, restaurants, supermarkets, and other establishments with a high influx of people.

According to Salazar, of the 300 verifications carried out nationwide, at least 100 cases of non-compliance with the Consumer Protection Law have been detected. Among the most serious violations is the use of uncalibrated scales, a situation that directly affects the economy of buyers, as they do not receive the right amount for what they pay.

In addition, 28 businesses have been identified that do not have adequate customer service mechanisms, which constitutes a legal offense. The Defensoría del Consumidor reminds that each business must have channels for consumers to submit complaints or suggestions.

Another of the most alarming irregularities are the 10 cases where expired products were found in establishments such as stores, restaurants, and bakeries. More than 60 items were found in bad condition, which represents a health risk and a serious offense against the consumer law.

In view of these findings, sanctioning processes have already been initiated that could result in fines of up to 500 minimum wages. The Defensoría del Consumidor reiterates its commitment to continue inspections throughout the holiday season and calls on merchants to comply with their legal and ethical obligations.
