The Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) reported that more than 33,000 livestock farmers have benefited to date from vaccination, deworming, and vitamin administration drives for their herds, as part of measures to support the sector in light of the weather conditions facing the country.
According to MAG’s ad honorem deputy minister, Oscar Domínguez, these initiatives have provided care for over 125,000 animals. The actions aim to contribute to animal health and well-being, particularly given that weather conditions have increased the needs of livestock producers.
In addition to veterinary care, MAG continues to facilitate access to livestock feed concentrate at prices ranging from US$10 to US$14, depending on the product’s protein content. This measure seeks to provide producers with an alternative to supplement animal nutrition and alleviate some of the pressure involved in maintaining the animals in good condition.
Domínguez also reported that, to date, more than 16,000 tons of sugarcane bagasse have been distributed to help feed livestock. This material is one of the alternatives made available to producers to address difficulties caused by weather conditions.
These efforts are complemented by the establishment of a forage and improved pasture bank in the country’s eastern region, which, according to the official, will be the largest in that area. The goal is to create a livestock feed source that helps boost forage availability for producers.
The deputy minister noted that these measures have been stepped up due to the country’s current weather situation but clarified that several of these actions are not merely temporary. He explained that some of the support measures implemented will remain in place permanently to ensure continued backing for the livestock sector.
In this way, the MAG is focusing part of its efforts on three main areas: animal healthcare, alternative feed options, and the development of forage sources. Authorities maintain that these measures aim to support livestock farmers both during the current weather situation and on an ongoing basis.
