The Government of El Salvador will continue with the implementation of the photo fine system in the main highways of the country. After its success in the Monseñor Romero Boulevard and the highway to Comalapa, authorities confirmed that this measure will come into effect in the highway to the Port of La Libertad in the first week of march.

The Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Romeo Rodríguez, explained that the beginning of the application was rescheduled to guarantee a correct signaling on the road. “We have moved it to the first week of march; at the end of next week, why? We really want to leave the highway well signposted”, the official detailed.
Since its implementation on january 9, 2025, the photomultations have proven to be an effective tool to reduce traffic accidents. On the Comalapa highway, this system has managed to reduce accidents by 60% and deaths by 70%, figures that reflect its positive impact on road safety.

The main objective of this measure is to reduce the accident rate caused by irresponsible behavior, such as speeding, lane encroachment and disrespect for traffic signals. In addition, it seeks to regulate the circulation of cargo transport, forcing it to use the right-hand lanes.
In february, the Vice-Ministry of Transportation reported 971 infractions imposed by means of photomultations, mostly for speeding. Each of these penalties carries a fine of US$150, reinforcing the authorities’ commitment to enforcing road regulations.

With the expansion of the system to more roads in the country, the government hopes to promote a change in the road culture of Salvadorans, prioritizing safety and reducing accidents on the country’s busiest roads.
