The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), in conjunction with the Republic of Korea, carried out a technical mission to Korea as part of the Non-Reimbursable Technical Cooperation aimed at modernizing public transportation in San Salvador. The initiative, financed with resources from the CABEI-Korea Sole Donor Trust Fund (KTF) for up to US$550,000.00, seeks to strengthen salvadoran institutional capacities through the exchange of knowledge and successful experiences.

During the mission, officials from the Viceministerio de Transporte (VMT) participated in meetings, conferences and technical visits focused on learning about the Korean urban mobility model, which stands out for its efficiency, integration and punctuality. Korea’s transportation system combines subways, buses, high-speed trains, and smart payment platforms, consolidating an advanced connectivity network.
One of the key moments was the visit to the Bucheon Traffic Information Center, where the salvadoran representatives learned about real-time traffic management technology systems, intelligent transportation and user-centered urban mobility solutions. In addition, they explored the operation of the KTX train and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, examples of innovation in interurban and metropolitan travel.
CABEI emphasized that this cooperation reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development in the region by facilitating access to successful public transportation models that can be adapted to El Salvador’s local needs. The Korean experience represents a valuable opportunity to accelerate the modernization of the country’s urban mobility system.
This effort is part of a comprehensive approach that promotes not only the improvement of transportation infrastructure, but also the application of technological and urban planning tools that contribute to more efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly mobility.
