The Central de Abastos (CDA) of Usulután has begun operations with the goal of facilitating the wholesale distribution of food in eastern El Salvador and parts of the central region, potentially benefiting more than one million residents. The new facility seeks to bring producers and buyers closer together, reduce distribution costs, and offer more affordable prices.
The CDA is located on Eva María Dimas Street in the Usulután district, Usulután Este municipality. The market is open to the public monday through saturday, from 2:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and on sundays from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., facilitating the activities of merchants and buyers who need to stock up from the early hours of the day.
The new center has 108 stalls selling fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products, fish, seafood, eggs, and meat. It also features ample parking, restrooms, storage areas, and administrative offices. Among its facilities are a lactation room and a playroom, designed to provide greater comfort for users.
One of the CDA’s key components is its direct connection with producers. Most of the food sold comes from a network of 115 producers in the Bajo Lempa region, Usulután, San Miguel, La Unión, and Morazán. These farmers receive technical assistance from the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) to produce high-quality food using open-field and controlled-environment farming practices.
The Central de Abastos model aims to reduce the role of intermediaries in the supply chain. By facilitating direct contact between producers and buyers, the aim is to reduce costs, distances, and travel times, which can help bring food to consumers at more competitive prices.
The Usulután Central de Abastos is the second wholesale market promoted by the government through the MAG and is part of a strategy to improve food distribution and strengthen productive activity. This infrastructure seeks to boost trade in eastern and central Guatemala, while simultaneously creating better conditions for producers and merchants.
