The mayor of San Salvador, Mario Durán, announced that the city will permanently confiscate merchandise from vendors selling products in public spaces where sales are prohibited, as part of a stricter measure to restore order in the city. The announcement was made via a video posted on his official Facebook page.
According to the mayor, from now on, any product confiscated for sale in unauthorized areas will not be reclaimed by the vendors. This decision marks a change from the previous procedure, in which merchandise was taken to the facilities of the Cuerpo de Agentes Municipales (CAM) and could be retrieved free of charge.

Durán indicated that the new measure was adopted after it was determined that the previous system had failed, as many vendors returned to the same locations to continue selling informally once they recovered their merchandise. Therefore, the municipality opted for a definitive action to prevent recidivism and ensure compliance with municipal ordinances.
The mayor clarified that the confiscated goods will not be destroyed, but rather donated to foundations, children’s homes, nursing homes, and orphanages, so that the merchandise can be put to social use and benefit vulnerable sectors of the population.

Although the municipality held dialogue sessions, provided notifications, and explained the regulations before implementing this measure, Durán emphasized that the priority is to guarantee order in public spaces. In that regard, he stated that the mayor’s office will continue removing vendors from prohibited areas until the conditions established by municipal regulations are restored.
