The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) formalized a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening environmental protection and the regional response to climate change. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding opens a space for cooperation so that both institutions can work together on initiatives that integrate economic development and environmental sustainability in Central America and other member countries.
This agreement establishes a flexible collaboration framework that will allow for the promotion of projects focused on biodiversity conservation and the restoration of degraded ecosystems, as well as the application of nature-based solutions. These actions seek to reduce the vulnerability of communities to the effects of climate change, while promoting the responsible use of natural resources and protecting the region’s biological wealth.
Among the main areas of focus is strengthening the technical and institutional capacities of the member countries through applied research, environmental monitoring, and support for sustainable land management. The alliance also emphasizes the participation of local and indigenous communities, recognizing their key role in ecosystem conservation and in building more sustainable and inclusive rural development models.

Another important component of the agreement is the identification of projects with the potential to access international financing. CABEI and IUCN will join forces to design and implement initiatives that can be supported by multilateral funds dedicated to climate and biodiversity, facilitating the mobilization of resources for high-impact environmental and social programs.
The memorandum also includes the development of innovative financial mechanisms to channel investments toward environmental protection. These include blended finance schemes, instruments that link debt reduction with conservation actions, and other alternatives that incentivize public and private sector participation in climate resilience projects.
With this alliance, both institutions reaffirm their commitment to the global Sustainable Development Goals and to international agreements on environmental and climate matters. The cooperation between the CABEI and the IUCN represents an important step toward integrating sustainability and climate action into the region’s growth strategies, with a long-term vision focused on the well-being of people and the protection of the natural environment.
