
El Salvador and Belgium held their first Political Consultations Meeting in the history of their bilateral relationship, an encounter that marks a new step in strengthening diplomatic dialogue, cooperation, and trade between the two countries. This was reported by salvadoran Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adriana Mira.
During the meeting, both delegations reaffirmed their interest in consolidating the relationship through a more dynamic agenda that includes high-level visits and greater institutional coordination. The goal is to expand opportunities for investment, trade, and technical cooperation in strategic sectors.
Key areas of cooperation
The meeting addressed topics of common interest with growth potential, including:
Renewable energy, as part of the transition to more sustainable sources.
The aeronautical sector, with a view to strengthening technical capabilities and trade opportunities.
Port-related exchanges, focused on modernization and logistical efficiency.

The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that this first round of consultations establishes a formal basis for ongoing political dialogue, which will allow for monitoring specific projects and expanding bilateral cooperation.
Boosting the customs and logistics agenda
During her visit to Belgium, Mira also met with the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO), Ian Saunders. The meeting aimed to advance the joint agenda with the General Directorate of Customs of El Salvador.
Technical cooperation with the WCO seeks to strengthen customs processes, improve trade facilitation, and consolidate the country as a regional logistics hub. This involves optimizing clearance times, modernizing systems, and reinforcing international standards of security and efficiency.

Salvadoran authorities believe these diplomatic overtures will help position the country in new European markets and consolidate strategic alliances in areas of high economic impact.
