With an investment of nearly US$4 million, the Government completed mitigation and protection works in the El Matazano neighborhood, in the district of Soyapango, San Salvador East, benefiting thousands of families residing in the area and surrounding communities.
The project was inaugurated by the Minister of Public Works of El Salvador, Romeo Rodríguez Herrera, who explained that the intervention is part of the National Mitigation Plan and addresses a long-standing problem caused by the formation of gullies in the area.
Intervention in two historical gullies
According to the official, two gullies that formed several decades ago and posed a risk to nearby homes were addressed in the area. Previously, a well that received rainwater runoff existed at the site, but it collapsed, causing structural damage and increasing the vulnerability of the terrain.

To address the situation, work was carried out in an area of approximately 35,000 square meters, where the following were constructed:
• Wells
• Ditches
• Drainage systems
• Hydraulic control structures
• A concrete channel over 200 meters long, which carries the water to a safe discharge point.
These works allow for the proper channeling of rainwater and reduce the risk of landslides or the widening of gullies, especially during the rainy season.
Benefiting thousands of families
According to the minister, the investment not only benefits the residents of the El Matazano neighborhood but also those of nearby communities. The goal is to provide greater security and peace of mind to families who for years have been exposed to damage to their homes and potential emergencies.
This project complements other interventions carried out in East San Salvador, including areas such as Distrito Italia, Bosques de Prusia, Los Santos 1 and Los Santos 2, as well as in Soyapango, where similar works have been undertaken to reduce soil vulnerability.

Focus on prevention
Authorities emphasized that these actions are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at preventing risks, strengthening hydraulic infrastructure, and protecting the population from weather events.
With this multi-million dollar investment, the government seeks to address historically critical areas and reduce the impact of rainfall in densely populated urban areas, prioritizing structural safety and soil stability in vulnerable communities.
