The government of President Nayib Bukele, through the Dirección de Obras Municipales (DOM), is carrying out a comprehensive transformation process in the hamlet of El Mozote, in northern Morazán, with the goal of making it a “model city for Latin America,” in compliance with a resolution from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

As part of these works, DOM crews will begin work on Monday, March 9, on the main street that connects to the town square of this historic site. Due to this work, the road will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic, and alternate routes will be available through nearby streets that connect to the Santa Sofía neighborhood and the Ranchería hamlet.

Between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., access will be controlled, and direct access to the clinic, sports complex, school, and park will be completely closed. Properly marked alternate routes will be available for these locations.

The works are part of a project to improve 1.8 kilometers of streets in the town center, which had never been addressed by previous administrations. On the main road, which will have an average width of six meters, excavations are underway for the installation of stormwater, sewage, and drinking water pipes, as well as the relocation of electrical and telecommunications wiring to underground systems.
The project includes the installation of more than 4,312 meters of ductwork for manholes, medium- and low-voltage service connections, and telecommunications transitions. For the sewage system, 2,398 meters of 8, 15, and 24-inch pipe will be installed.

Additional works also include the construction of a stormwater collection system, manholes, catch basins, relocation of drinking water pipes, and the construction of curbs and gutters.

Subsequently, a road structure will be laid, consisting of a 20-centimeter layer of granular base with non-woven geotextile and geogrid for greater soil stability. A 20-centimeter soil-cement base will be applied over this, followed by a 7.5-centimeter asphalt layer. Four other adjacent asphalt roads are in their final stages of construction.
These projects are part of the 15 projects being carried out by the Dirección de Obras Municipales (DOM), in El Mozote. In the first phase, the remodeled memorial plaza, kindergarten, and the parish church have already been completed. In the second phase, a sports complex, the Mounted Police headquarters, a parish multipurpose hall, and a wastewater treatment plant were inaugurated.

Construction is also currently underway on the Centro Urbano de Bienestar y Oportunidades (CUBO),building, an amphitheater, a commercial and food plaza, a geriatric clinic, and a Senior Citizens’ Club.

Additionally, the government is carrying out 16 kilometers of road improvements in the cantons of Jocote Amarillo, Ranchería, La Guacamaya, El Pinalito, La Laguna, the Alto Miro neighborhood in the Cerro Pando canton, and the hamlets of Los Toriles and El Potrero in the La Joya canton.

As part of the completed works, the Dirección de Obras Municipales (DOM) delivered 1.6 kilometers of concrete and cobblestone streets in the urban center of the Meanguera district, including roads in the El Centro and El Calvario neighborhoods and the road to the La Joya canton.
In the department of Morazán, the DOM has more than 90 projects underway or completed. These include 26 urban and rural street renovation projects totaling over 70 kilometers, including a presidential promise of more than 13 kilometers between Arambala and Joateca.
Five drinking water projects are also underway in Arambala, Jocoro, San Isidro, Sociedad, and Cacaopera. Four health units in El Divisadero, Sensembra, Yoloaiquín, and Yamabal; three electrification projects in Cacaopera, Chilanga, and Yoloaiquín; and two intervention projects in historic centers, in El Mozote and Cacaopera.
