The Minister of Finance, Jerson Posada, welcomed the delegations participating in the Regional Conference “Strengthening Customs Institutions against Organized Crime and Money Laundering in Latin America”, a meeting aimed at reinforcing cooperation among countries to combat crimes originating at borders that impact the region’s security and economy.
During the opening of the event, the official emphasized that the conference provides a forum to coordinate actions, exchange experiences, and promote joint responses to challenges related to organized crime and money laundering.
He explained that one of the objectives of the meeting is to strengthen collaboration among customs institutions, especially in areas such as information sharing, operational coordination, and control mechanisms that allow for a more effective response to transnational illicit activities.
Posada noted that the government continues to make progress in strengthening customs through more effective controls and modern management, with the goal of bolstering institutional capacities at border crossings and improving oversight mechanisms.

In this context, he indicated that customs play a key role not only in facilitating trade but also in detecting and preventing crimes related to smuggling, criminal networks, and money laundering.
The conference brings together delegations and representatives from customs institutions across the region to address strategies aimed at confronting common threats and strengthening regional cooperation on border security.
Topics typically covered in these types of meetings include modernization of controls, risk management, institutional strengthening, intelligence sharing, and coordination in the face of transnational criminal organizations.
The minister emphasized that this forum seeks to translate into concrete actions that will allow for more effective responses to organized crime, based on greater collaboration among countries.

He also emphasized that strengthening customs institutions is an important component for protecting the economy, safeguarding borders, and improving response capabilities to threats that transcend national borders.
Holding this regional conference highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing complex crimes that require coordination among multiple actors and institutions.
With this meeting, authorities seek to promote an agenda focused on strengthening customs capabilities, promoting best practices, and consolidating regional cooperation mechanisms to address challenges affecting Latin America.
