The transportation sector registered the largest increase in the Índice de Precios al Consumidor (IPC) during april 2026, rising 2.68% compared to march of the same year, according to data from the Banco Central de Reserva (BCR). The index rose from 112.17 points in march to 115 points in april, becoming the main driver of the monthly price increase in the country.
The performance of the transportation sector reflects higher costs related to fuel, mobility, and associated services, which directly impacts the daily spending of Salvadoran households. This increase can be seen in areas such as gasoline, transportation fares, and vehicle maintenance.
Overall, the national IPC also showed a monthly increase. The overall index rose from 132.18 points in march to 133.12 in april, equivalent to an increase of 0.71%. This indicator measures the average price variation of a basket of goods and services representative of household consumption.
In addition to transportation, other sectors also registered increases during april. The food and non-alcoholic beverages category rose 0.73%, from 158.01 to 159.17 points, reflecting possible increases in basic everyday consumer goods.

The recreation and culture sector had one of the most significant variations after transportation, with an increase of 0.90%, rising from 93.76 to 94.75 points.
Meanwhile, housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels registered an increase of 0.42%, rising from 149.34 to 149.96 points. The furniture, household goods, and routine maintenance category advanced 0.59%, from 111.43 to 112.08 points.
In the health sector, the IPC increased by 0.28%, rising from 116.70 to 117.02 points. Meanwhile, restaurants and hotels grew by 0.25%, from 166.48 to 167.38 points. Miscellaneous goods and services also reflected a rise of 0.27%, advancing from 130.99 to 131.35 points.
In contrast, some sectors showed reductions in their indices during april. The clothing and footwear category fell by 0.15%, from 100.07 to 99.92 points, possibly influenced by seasonal discounts or promotions.

Likewise, alcoholic beverages and tobacco reported a slight decrease of 0.02%, while the communications sector showed a reduction of 0.41%, falling from 80.14 to 79.81 points.
The education sector was the only one that remained unchanged between march and april, maintaining an index of 117.07 points.
Data published by the Banco Central de Reserva (BCR) reflects that, during april 2026, the price increase was mainly driven by the transportation sector, while other sectors showed moderate variations, both upward and downward.
