El Salvador’s Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 1.05% in may 2026 compared to april of the same year, according to data from the Banco Central de Reserva (BCR). This result was primarily driven by the electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply sector, which reported the largest monthly increase among all economic activities evaluated.
According to the BCR, the overall index increased from 137.71 points in april to 139.16 points in may 2026, representing a rise of 1.45 points.
The sector that contributed most to this result was electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply. Its index rose from 139.09 points in april to 154.07 points in may, an increase of 14.98 points or 10.77%, the highest variation recorded during the period.
Following this sector were other service activities, whose index increased from 121.04 to 123.26 points, a change of 1.84%; Manufacturing Industries, which rose from 142.54 to 143.55 points, registering growth of 0.71%; real estate activities, which advanced from 127.84 to 128.54 points, a change of 0.55%; and accommodation and food service activities, which climbed from 158.20 to 159.06 points, equivalent to 0.54%.

In contrast, few sectors showed declines during the month. Transportation and storage decreased from 119.11 to 119.07 points, a drop of 0.04 points or 0.03%. Similarly, Arts, entertainment, and recreation activities fell from 144.75 to 144.61 points, reflecting a reduction of 0.14 points or 0.10%.
Several sectors remained virtually unchanged between april and may. These included Water supply, sewerage, waste management, and sanitation activities, which remained at 123.21 points; Information and telecommunications, stable at 121.15 points; education, which continued at 153.06 points; and human health and social assistance activities, which remained at 125.46 points. Professional, scientific, and technical activities also showed minimal variation, moving from 102.22 to 102.26 points, equivalent to just 0.04%.
Comparison with may 2025

Comparing the results from may 2026 with those from may 2025, the overall index rose from 135.39 to 139.16 points. This represents an increase of 3.77 points, or a year-on-year change of 2.78%.
Once again, the electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply sector stood out for registering the largest increase. Its index rose from 139.62 points in may 2025 to 154.07 points in may 2026, equivalent to an increase of 14.45 points, or 10.35%.
The data reflects that the monthly growth of the PPI was concentrated mainly in the energy sector, while most economic activities registered moderate increases, stability, or slight decreases. This indicates that the upward trend observed in may was primarily due to the increase in costs associated with the supply of electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning, rather than a generalized price increase across all productive sectors of the country.
