The U.S. Embassy in El Salvador announced a new grant of US$224,586 to support the conservation of Parque Arqueológico Cihuatán, one of the country’s most important pre-Hispanic sites. The funds will be awarded through the Fondo de los Embajadores para la Preservación Cultural (AFCP), a program that finances projects aimed at protecting cultural heritage around the world.
This is the third time the United States has supported conservation efforts at Cihuatán through this fund, reflecting its commitment to protecting a site considered key to understanding the history and development of the ancient civilizations that inhabited El Salvador.
The new investment will allow for a series of actions focused on both preserving the archaeological structures and improving the visitor experience. Among the main activities is the conservation of buildings and remains that form part of the archaeological complex, with the aim of reducing their deterioration and ensuring their preservation for future generations.

In addition, the project includes specialized documentation of the site using modern techniques such as high-resolution photography, three-dimensional modeling, and the creation of technical drawings. These tools will facilitate a more precise record of the structures and contribute to strengthening research and conservation efforts.
Another component of the program will be the improvement of visitor infrastructure. To this end, new information panels will be installed, offering historical and archaeological data about the park, allowing for a broader understanding of the site’s cultural significance.
Furthermore, the walking trail within the archaeological site will be widened, facilitating access to different areas and providing a more complete experience for tourists, students, and researchers visiting Cihuatán.

As part of the project’s new developments, the first bilingual guide to a Salvadoran archaeological site will also be created. This tool will aim to make historical information more accessible to both national and international visitors, strengthening the park’s tourism and educational potential.
With this new grant, the United States will surpass half a million dollars invested in the preservation of Cihuatán through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. This initiative complements ongoing efforts to conserve El Salvador’s historical heritage and seeks to ensure that one of the country’s most important archaeological treasures continues to be studied, protected, and shared with future generations.
