The La Libertad Costa area is establishing itself as a key driver of tourism activity in El Salvador. Tourism minister Morena Valdez reported that approximately 80,000 families reside in the area, while the tourism sector comprises 450 businesses generating 150,000 jobs along the Surf City stretch, which spans from San Diego Beach to Mizata.
These figures were shared during the commemoration of International Cooperation Day, held at Punta Roca, La Libertad Costa, under the slogan “Cooperamos hoy. Transformamos el mañana”. The gathering brought together government officials and representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in El Salvador to highlight the impact of international cooperation on various development projects.
Valdez explained that cooperation has enabled the advancement of various initiatives in La Libertad Costa, aimed not only at tourism growth but also at the well-being of local communities. Projects mentioned included a high-performance sports center, the creation of a master plan, human trafficking prevention programs, and training sessions designed to strengthen residents’ entrepreneurial skills.
The minister also highlighted the implementation of “family-friendly” programs, which seek to expand tourism offerings and create suitable spaces for families. These actions are part of a strategy to leverage Surf City’s potential as an international destination while simultaneously addressing the long-standing needs of local communities.
The economic significance of tourism is reflected in the 450 registered businesses and the 150,000 jobs generated along this coastal corridor. Coupled with a population of approximately 80,000 families, tourism has become a vital activity for creating economic opportunities and fostering development for the residents of La Libertad Costa.
During the event, minister of Foreign Affairs Alexandra Hill emphasized the role of international cooperation in the projects undertaken by the country. He noted that collaborative efforts with friendly nations and organizations have helped boost investment aimed at the social well-being of salvadorans.
