Minister of Public Works Romeo Herrera reported that between september 30 and october 5, 150 citations were issued to freight transport vehicles because of nationwide checks maintained by the authorities. The official also detailed that 3,552 violations have been recorded against freight transport vehicles between january 1 and october 4.
Herrera explained that these checks are part of efforts to verify that freight transport vehicles meet the necessary conditions for operation. Inspections cover driver and vehicle documentation, as well as aspects related to safety and the condition of the vehicles.
Items being inspected include driver’s licenses, permits, and vehicle registration cards. Components such as brakes and tires are also checked, along with any modifications that could pose a danger to the salvadoran population.
The minister noted that, as part of this operation, more than 60 checkpoints have been set up nationwide. He also indicated that over 100 vehicle inspections were conducted in just six days and that 35 freight transport units were impounded during these checks.
The head of the Vice Ministry of Transport, Nelson Reyes, explained that authorities are stepping up inspections to ensure freight transport vehicles hold the appropriate permits to operate. Regarding drivers, authorities verify that they possess the required license, while vehicle registration cards are checked for the units themselves.
Another announcement made by Reyes is that 100% of freight transport vehicles will undergo an annual technical inspection as a requirement for obtaining a vehicle registration card. This measure is part of the effort authorities are implementing to enhance safety standards for this type of transport. Authorities also maintain traffic restrictions for freight transport during peak traffic hours. According to Herrera, these restrictions begin at 4:30 a.m. and last until 9:00 a.m., and apply during nighttime hours, with the aim of preventing heavy vehicles from entering or leaving the San Salvador Metropolitan Area during times of heaviest traffic.
Herrera stated that these enforcement operations are ongoing and will continue nationwide. With 3,552 citations issued between january 1 and october 4, in addition to the 150 tickets recorded between september 30 and october 5, authorities continue to verify documentation, permits, and the condition of freight vehicles as part of efforts to enhance road safety across the country.
