60 deputies of the Legislative Assembly approved the allocation of US$5 million of the institution’s budget, for the remainder of the 2024-2027 legislative period, to develop scholarship programs and projects for children and young people.
According to the resolution approved by the plenary, the current budget for this year to execute the educational benefits, from july to december, will be US$792,000. For 2025 and 2026, the amount to be allocated will be US$1,584,000 for each year; while for 2027, it will be US$1,040,000 from january to april.
According to what was stated in the 11th plenary session, the money for the “Dagoberto Gutiérrez” legislative scholarships, as the project will be called, comes from a significant decrease in the budget assigned to each deputy for the payment of their staff salaries.
“This program, endowed with US$5 million that comes from the Legislative Assembly’s budget savings, will be a beacon of hope for those underprivileged Salvadorans. It will open the doors to education and integral development for those who need it most” said Congressman Navarro.
The Legislative body is committed to the adequate use of public resources, that is why, following the Government’s line, the parliamentarians endorsed in june 2023 -as a first measure- the reduction from 84 to 60 deputies. “Since the beginning of our administration, we have committed ourselves to austerity policies that prioritize savings and efficiency in the use of public resources. We have eliminated unjustified privileges in this institution, we have reduced superfluous expenses, we have stripped ourselves of benefits that only marked inequality and corruption”, said Navarro.
