The Infrastructure and Territorial Development Commission of the Legislative Assembly issued a favorable opinion to temporarily amend the Law on Fiscal Rights for Vehicle Circulation, with the aim of extending the validity of vehicle license plates with the 2011 format until august 31, 2027.
The measure seeks to prevent vehicle owners from having to bear the cost of replacing their plates in the short term, providing economic relief to thousands of drivers throughout the country.
Currently, the regulations stipulate that license plates with the 2011 format are valid until august 31. However, if the opinion is approved by the full legislature, the deadline will be extended for an additional year, allowing motorists to continue using them until august 2027.
The initiative was presented by the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y de Transporte (MOPT) and analyzed by the members of the legislative commission. During the study session on the proposal, Deputy Minister of Transportation Nelson Reyes explained that this would be the third time the legislation has been reformed to extend the validity of vehicle registrations and avoid additional costs for the public.
According to the official, the extension will also allow the government to move forward with plans related to a future renewal of the license plates that have been in circulation since 2011. Although no date was specified for this process, he indicated that there are projects aimed at modernizing the vehicle registration system.
The proposal is particularly relevant due to the size of the country’s vehicle fleet. According to data from the Observatorio Nacional de Seguridad Vialthere are currently 2,108,298 vehicles circulating in El Salvador, so a mass replacement of license plates would represent a significant expense for owners.
If it receives final approval from the full legislature, the reform will allow current license plates to remain valid for another year, providing more time to plan for future renewals and preventing more than two million drivers from facing an immediate expense for changing their plates.
