Written by Evelyn Alas

The Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL), informed that they are carrying out preventive discharges of 500 cubic meters per second in the Central Hidroeléctrica 15 de septiembre, due to the rains registered in the northern part of the country and Honduras.

The discharges made by CEL are to control the level of the reservoir which will activate the early warning system that will give prior notice to the communities living in the Bajo Lempa area. This work is coordinated with the General Directorate of Civil Protection.

The communities of the Lower Lempa should be aware of the indications provided by Civil Protection in order to carry out the necessary evacuations so as not to be affected by the discharge of 2,500 m3/s of water.

CEL indicated that "we are discharging 500 cubic meters per second in our Central Hidroeléctrica 5 de noviembre. The discharges are made preventively to maintain the levels of the reservoir as a result of the last rains in the northern part of the country".
