Mauricio Márquez, a beekeeper with 7 apiaries strategically distributed in Chalatenango, Cuscatlán and San Vicente, has managed to harvest an average of 25 bottles of honey per hive this season. Thanks to the technical assistance provided by CENTA, Márquez has been able to diversify his production and offer honey varieties with unique flavors under his brand Natural Maximus, including honey with eucalyptus, balsam, propolis and syrups.
Continued support from CENTA and the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) has been fundamental to the success of beekeepers like Márquez. The implementation of innovative practices, such as the use of food-grade extraction equipment and technical follow-up in apiary management, has guaranteed the production of excellent quality honey, marketed at US$5.00 in the national Agromarkets.
In addition to promoting the economic profitability of beekeeping, this activity contributes to environmental conservation and the well-being of the communities. Through Sustainable Agrifood Systems, eco-friendly agriculture is promoted and technical training is provided to farmers, thus ensuring effective crop management and sustainable production in harmony with the natural environment.
In a country where agriculture is vital to the livelihoods of many families, initiatives such as beekeeping represent a significant step towards a more sustainable and prosperous future. Commitment to innovation and collaboration between the agricultural sector and government institutions are key to meeting today's challenges, including climate change, and building a brighter tomorrow for everyone.
