Salvadoran pig farmers will meet 100% of national demand

Written by Evelyn Alas

Given the recent cases of Peste Porcina Africana (PPA), in the Dominican Republic and the rapid spread in Africa, Europe and Asia, the minister of Agriculture and Livestock, David Martinez, has taken preventive measures to avoid possible entry of the plague that could affect the production of pigs in the country.

The members of the Asociación de Salvadoreña de Porcicultores (ASPORC) through a press relese indicated that they are big enough to supply the demand of the national market.

They added that they thanked the MAG representative for having taken immediate measures to safeguard national production and avoid losses in the pork production and distribution sector.

''As pork producers we have the capacity to supply the demand of national consumption, with fresh pork of excellent quality and produced in El Salvador, we are working a strict compliance of the biosecurity measures, in order to continue safeguarding and guaranteeing the excellent animal health of our herds'', indicates the ASPORC.

The measures taken by Agriculture and Livestock also cover the importation through direct consumption, as an example: a pupusa revuelta containing pork rinds.

The measures that will be of prevention for the national pork production establish that:

The importation and/or transit of live pigs, their products, and by-products, originating from countries with PPA is prohibited.

The entry of all meat products and meat by-products for non-commercial purposes, through parcels, luggage, among others, is prohibited.

Pork products found trying to enter El Salvador's borders will be seized and destroyed.

The Peste Porcina Africana (PPA), is not a disease that affects people, neither through the consumption of pork, nor by approaching sick pigs, but the rapid spread of the disease may affect the value, production and distribution of meat.

In the national territory, salvadorans can continue buying and consuming pork on a regular basis without any risk of getting sick with plague.
