More than 440 farming families in the Laguna Seca canton of Nueva Concepción, Chalatenango, received food baskets as part of the actions promoted by the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG) to support rural communities affected by weather conditions during the 2026 agricultural season.
The distribution benefited residents of the hamlets of Los Colorados, Torerona, El Paterno, El Sauce, La Cebadilla, Zamoras, Las Tablas, El Chagüite and Sitio Las Flores, where numerous families depend on subsistence farming to produce food primarily for their household consumption.
Each basket contains a variety of basic products and essential food items, including beans, rice, oil, corn flour, sugar, coffee, sardines, milk, oats, plantains, green chilies, onions, tomatoes, and eggs, and other products that help meet the nutritional needs of the beneficiary families.
The support comes at a time marked by the effects of the prolonged dry spell, which has created difficulties for staple grain producers. Farmer Julio Garay explained that the weather conditions have impacted his corn and bean crops, so he considers the aid an important support to maintain his family’s food supply while dealing with crop losses.
Similarly, farmers Felicita Gutiérrez and Cecilia de Cisneros, who have been cultivating staple grains for their families since childhood, emphasized that this type of assistance provides support for households and also helps reduce expenses during a time of difficulties for agricultural production.
The MAG indicated that the distribution of food is part of the measures implemented to assist subsistence farming families whose crops have been affected by weather conditions. The strategy aims to provide immediate support while producers continue their activities and cope with the impact on their harvests.
In addition to food baskets, authorities are carrying out other actions aimed at the agricultural sector, including the distribution of agricultural inputs, technical assistance to producers, and the establishment of auxiliary irrigation systems to help maintain production in the affected areas.
The sale of maintenance feed at preferential prices has also been promoted in the eastern and central regions, along with monitoring the prices of basic food items, with the goal of providing support to families and producers given the challenges facing the sector.
With these measures, the Government seeks to address the immediate needs of rural communities and, at the same time, strengthen producers’ capacity to continue their agricultural activities in the face of the effects of the weather conditions affecting the region.
