At the request of the President of the Republic Nayib Bukele, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly approved, with 59 votes, the Special Law to Promote Competitiveness and Facilitate Access to Products of the Expanded Basic Food Basket, a tool that eliminates Derechos Arancelarios a la Importación (DAI) on 120 products, to ensure the supply of these products to the salvadoran population.
The exoneration of tariffs will be valid for 10 years and will also apply to agricultural inputs and raw materials that guarantee agricultural production and food security.
Some products that will be free of the IAD are beef, pork, chicken, turkey, fluid milk, table eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, cabbage, beans, oranges, corn, rice and sugar. Also to animal feed, fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.
The regulation also establishes that the Defensoría del Consumidor must monitor and watch over the market to verify that the tariff reductions are reflected in the prices to the final consumer.
Likewise, the Ministries of Economy, Finance and Agriculture and Livestock are empowered to issue agreements, instructions, circulars, resolutions and any other administrative action, within their respective competences and responsibilities, to guarantee a correct and effective application of the law.
Congresswoman Suecy Callejas expressed that the regulation will alleviate the economy of salvadorans, especially in this period of rains in which grain or vegetable crops have been affected. She recalled that, in the last legislature, a Special Transitory Law to Combat Price Inflation of Basic Products was approved, which was extended until 2026.
