More than 85% of El Salvador’s tourism sector is led by women, a figure that reflects the significant role of businesswomen and entrepreneurs in an industry that generates economic activity in various communities across the country. This statistic was highlighted during the First International Congress “El Salvador, un Destino para Ellas”, an event that brought together tourism companies, travelers, and entrepreneurs.
Based on this level of participation, women’s tourism presents an opportunity to further strengthen the sector. Increasingly, women are traveling alone or in family groups, including mothers, daughters, and grandmothers, generating demand for services and experiences related to recreation, sports, adventure, and wellness.
In this context, the minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez, noted that it is becoming more common to see women traveling throughout El Salvador and participating in activities such as surfing competitions, yoga retreats, and other recreational experiences. This trend opens opportunities for hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and businesses that are part of the service chain.
Furthermore, the growth of this segment is linked to factors that have contributed to improving the visitor experience. These include safety and investment in tourism infrastructure, elements that, according to the Ministry of Tourism, have helped position the country among the fastest-growing destinations worldwide, according to UN Tourism data.
The increased arrival of female travelers also represents an opportunity for businesses to adapt their offerings to new needs and preferences. This can translate into greater diversification of tourism products and services and, therefore, new revenue opportunities for companies and businesses.
For this reason, the congress also aimed to strengthen the capabilities of industry stakeholders. During the event, training sessions were held to help companies better understand the characteristics of this traveler profile and respond to her expectations.
The prominence of women within the sector also has an economic dimension, due to their participation as business owners, entrepreneurs, and workers. Their presence helps to boost local economies by providing services and generating activity around tourist destinations.
In this way, women’s tourism is consolidating itself as an additional opportunity for the development of El Salvador’s tourism industry. The combination of broad female participation in the sector, increased demand for experiences from female travelers, investment in infrastructure and training seeks to strengthen an activity with the potential to continue generating economic opportunities.
