The department of Morazán is poised to register one of the most outstanding results in its agricultural history thanks to potato cultivation. According to Oscar Domínguez, the honorary vice minister of the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG), current harvests are reaching yields exceeding 800 quintales per block, a figure that positions the eastern region as a new benchmark in national potato production.
This result is especially significant because agricultural yields are one of the main indicators for measuring agricultural productivity. A higher number of quintals per manzana means that producers are obtaining a larger harvest from the same area of land, which translates into better resource utilization, higher incomes, and more efficient production.
Authorities attribute this performance to the work carried out within the Programa de Aumento a la Producción, which has promoted the cultivation of the Russet National potato and the Chinese hybrid potato, varieties that have demonstrated high productivity under Morazán’s climatic and soil conditions.

Another highlight is that, for the first time, 100 blocks (approximately 100 acres) of potatoes are being harvested simultaneously. This demonstrates not only an increase in productivity per cultivated area but also a significant expansion of the land dedicated to this agricultural product.
If these yield levels are maintained throughout the harvest, Morazán could become the second most important potato-producing region in El Salvador, second only to northern Chalatenango. This progress represents an important step for eastern agriculture, which is increasingly demonstrating a greater capacity to diversify its crops and increase its contribution to national production.

The results also reflect the potential of incorporating new technologies, improved seeds, and technical assistance to boost agricultural productivity. For producers, achieving yields exceeding 800 quintals per manzana represents an opportunity to increase the profitability of their crops and strengthen the economic development of their communities.
With these figures, Morazán not only celebrates a historic harvest but also demonstrates how innovation and technical support can transform agricultural yields and open new opportunities for the country’s productive sector.
