The General Directorate of Customs of El Salvador announced the implementation of the online registration system for the movement of vehicles during the Easter Week period. This measure seeks to facilitate the transit of travelers, streamline the process of entering the country and ensure a more efficient experience for those moving through the country’s land and air borders.
The Director General of Customs, Benjamín Mayorga, explained that the institution will operate every day during the season at the different border points. In addition, 200 new staff members were incorporated to reinforce the service at El Salvador’s International Airport and at the main land borders. The measure is complemented by the provision of free Internet in border areas, under the name “IP ADUANASFRONTERAS” network.
One of the main innovations is the introduction of a digital system for registering vehicle registration permits. This will allow drivers of vehicles from countries outside the CA-4 (agreement between El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua) to apply for their 90-day circulation permit through a QR code, without the need for face-to-face procedures. For CA-4 countries, only documentation proving vehicle ownership will be required.
Mayorga noted that the objective of these actions is to achieve greater efficiency, reduce waiting times and provide a warm and humane treatment, especially to the salvadoran diaspora and the more than 135,000 international tourists expected to arrive during the season. With this, Customs intends to offer a more orderly and safe experience for both nationals and foreigners.
This initiative may also represent an economic benefit for salvadorans. The digitization of customs procedures reduces operating costs, minimizes the risk of errors or fraud, and strengthens tourism, generating greater economic flow in border and tourist areas. It also allows entrepreneurs and local businesses to take advantage of the increase in visitors without facing logistical delays.
With this modernization, El Salvador is moving towards a more agile, technological, and user-centered border management, benefiting both the tourism sector and the national economy.
