BFA brings its financial services closer through the Cajas Rurales

Written by Dinero Staff

BFA expects to open more branches in the eastern and western areas. To date, the agencies in Teotepeque and Osicala serve about 50 transactions per day.

In order to be close to the people and as part of its Financial Inclusion objectives, the Banco de Fomento Agropecuario (BFA) designed the Cajas Rurales Program, with which it provides close attention in different towns and municipalities of the country; above all, providing support to people who do not have financial services in that area, thus facilitating the development of new and better businesses.

The Cajas Rurales Program consists of installing banking windows in simple infrastructures provided by the municipal governments; currently there are two, located in Osicala, Morazán and in Teotepeque, La Libertad.

This network of physical channels will serve to bring the Bank's financial and non-financial services closer to the country's municipalities, cantons and hamlets, which are difficult to access because many of the people who live in these rural areas have difficulty getting around due to their low income.

The BFA is committed to providing comprehensive and sustainable financial solutions, with an emphasis on the rural sector, contributing to financial inclusion, business growth, food sovereignty and the progressive bankization of the country's vulnerable sectors.

The program began in 2020 through an alliance with the Ministerio de Desarrollo Territorial , which was part of the government's commitment to provide better service to the beneficiaries of its social programs. The Osicala branch was inaugurated in October and the Teotepeque branch in December of last year.

In order to determine the municipalities where the Cajas Rurales will be installed, a prioritization of areas with accessibility problems to and from the BFA's current service centers is carried out, with emphasis on places where there is no or little presence of traditional banking and with significant levels of poverty.

Services available at Cajas Rurales:

  • Savings and Checking Account deposits and withdrawals.
  • Payment of BFA loans.
  • Payment of basic services and miscellaneous collections.
  • Payment of basic services (FISDL among other alliances).
  • Granting of credits.
