A. M. Google will finance the construction of three nuclear power plants in the United States to supply its data centers, whose energy demand has increased significantly due to the growth of technologies such as artificial intelligence. The agreement was signed with Elementl Power, a company specialized in atomic energy.
According to the announcement, each plant will have a generating capacity of 600 megawatts, although no details have been disclosed about the specific locations or the total cost of the project. The move represents a strategic bid by Google to ensure a steady electricity supply and reduce its carbon footprint through what it calls “clean energy.”
Elementl Power, founded in 2022 and based in South Carolina, does not yet have operational nuclear plants, but aims to reach 10 gigawatts of generating capacity by 2035. This alliance with Google would mark the start of its large-scale operations.
Google presented the project as a fast track to boost its energy sustainability initiatives and respond to the growing electricity consumption of its data centers, especially in the face of the rise of artificial intelligence, which demands large volumes of energy to operate efficiently.
Under the terms of the agreement, Google also reserves the right to acquire the nuclear plants once they become operational, reflecting its interest in having more direct control over its energy infrastructure going forward.
